Course description: This course will investigate the process of teaching the Martha Graham Technique and will cover the basic exercises to clarify concepts and methods of instruction. Participants will analyze the objective of each exercise as well as its teaching points. The course will adapt to the needs of participants and will cover teaching methods for different class populations from K-12 to studio/professional and university students.

Content: Technique classes, Repertory classes, Pedagogy classes and Preparatory time.

Schedule: Schedule will depend on class level.

  • Technique classes: Level to be determined
       Elementary: 1:00 to 3:00pm
       Intermediate: 9:00 to 11:00pm
       Advanced: 11:00 to 1:00pm
  • Repertory classes: Level to be determined.
       Elementary: M, T, Th 4:30 to 6:00pm
       Intermediate/Advanced: T, Th 3:00 to 4:30, W 4:30 to 6:00pm
       Men’s Rep: M, T, Th 4:30 to 6:00
  • Pedagogy classes: Martha Graham teaching methods
       Monday to Friday: 6:00 to 8:00pm, Fridays, 4:00 to 7:00pm
  • Preparatory classes: Space available for participants to prepare classes. Mondays, Wednesdays 3:00 to 4:30pm
  • Lecture: History of The Martha Graham Technique. July 3rd, 4:30 to 6:00pm

Course breakdown

Week one: Will focus on planning a class: Floor, Standing, Traveling – Syllabus - Recognizing exercises.

Week two: Practicing teaching on each other. Friday July 3rd, Lecture about the Technique at 4:30pm.

Week three: Practicing teaching on each other.

Week four: Practicing teaching on each other. Friday will be an exam.

Week one to four: Technique and Repertory classes (observing or taking). Participants will be asked to write about connections between repertory and technique exercises. Mondays and Wednesdays 3:00 to 4:30 will be meeting time to work on class planning in teams or individually. Film screening – Additional Class observations (different levels).
