Intensive Programs

Save the Date!
Winter Intensive 2011: December 27, 2011 through January 13, 2012. Download a brochure and registration form.

The Winter and Summer Intensives are specifically designed for students who are unable to attend the Martha Graham School year-round or who wish to progress rapidly in the Martha Graham Technique. The courses (three weeks in winter, six weeks in summer) offer dancers a rigorous program in Martha Graham Technique, Martha Graham Graham Repertory, and Dance Composition. The courses conclude with Studio Showings by Intensive Students.

Students may enroll for the entire program or for individual weeks, depending upon class requirements.

“An original way of communication… which constitutes the most beautiful sustained movements by a living composer”

— Agnes deMille on the Martha Graham Technique

Classes

All students will be evaluated during the first two days of class to determine appropriate technique level.

    • Elementary Technique: For students who wish to learn the basics of Graham Technique and accelerate rapidly.
    • Intermediate Technique: For students with strong elementary background in Graham Technique who wish to increase facility.
    • Advanced Technique: For students with extensive experience in Graham Technique who wish to deepen physical mastery.
  • Repertory Workshops

  • Composition (Please Note: Composition may be taken without technique or repertory.)

Studies in how to construct a dance. The first day of class will be placement evaluation by composition teacher.

  • Choreography Showcase

Show your own choreography in an informal showing at the legendary Martha Graham School of Contemporary Dance on July 12 or/and July 26 2011. This opportunity is for participants of the Summer Intensive only.

Choreography works must not exceed 6 minutes and must be already choreographed. Studio space may be available for rent for rehearsals prior to the date of the showing but availabilities will be limited. Better come ready. Register at the front desk.

No fire, liquid, paint, powder, or anything dangerous or subject to damage the wood floor will be allowed. No nudity. The performing space is intimate and audience will be very close. No lighting will be available.

The Winter and Summer Intensives are made possible with public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts, a state agency.
