Children and Pre-Teens Classes

For Boys and Girls

Founded in 1926, the Martha Graham School of Contemporary Dance is dedicated to perpetuating the unique art form developed by Martha Graham. Recognized as one of the greatest artists of the 20th century, comparable in stature to Stravinsky and Picasso, Martha Graham created a technique of movement based upon the expressive capacity of the human body. At the Martha Graham School of Contemporary Dance children of all ages have the opportunity to explore this unique curriculum encompassing body and spirit. Children develop a sense of discipline in a creative atmosphere and are also introduced to the work of Martha Graham through video showings and special events in the heart of the legendary Master’s house. The School is truly a rich cultural resource in New York City.

“Each one is a potential star and it is this ability to see themselves as unique that we hope to accomplish in class. They?re special and I want them to be regarded as such.” — Martha Graham

Children from 6–9 discover the basic elements of the Martha Graham Technique as they explore ways in which the body responds to and expresses emotions. They will develop their imaginations, body coordination, and musicality, all leading to higher self-esteem and increasing body awareness. A nurturing atmosphere encourages children to stretch their imaginations as they develop basic movement skills. Each end of session will conclude with a studio showing for family and friends.

Children from 10–12 are formally introduced to basic Martha Graham vocabulary, including physical “contraction and release”, use of spiral, and shift of weight. Learning about the relationship of Martha Graham Technique to other art forms such as music, art, and literature helps students experience the power of dance and the process of creative collaboration. Children create their own short dance studies and perform them for their peers. Each end of session will conclude with a studio showing for family and friends.
